Lumentum Holdings, Inc. The Commercial Lasers Business Unit offers OEM customers the widest variety of laser modules, engines, and components for macromaterials processing, micromachining, biotechnology, analytics instrumentation, and more.  These high-performance fiber lasers enable advanced manufacturing techniques such as high speed sheet metal cutting and welding.  High precision, UV nanosecond micromachining lasers offer unique compact designs for high growth markets. Custom and turnkey femtosecond and picosecond ultrafast solid-state lasers support industrial processes and scientific environments.  Lumentum diode, direct-diode, and gas lasers reliably meet the needs of a wide variety of OEM applications.

Lumentum Commercial Laser products include kW class, ultrafast, Q-switched, and low-power continuous wave lasers. This diverse product set delivers a full range of operational performance, proprietary SESAM technology, direct-process fiber connect processes, high pulse-pulse stability and reliability, and low noise with excellent beam quality.  These laser products continuously set industry standards for reliability and longevity.

Lumentum Commercial Lasers are critical to advanced manufacturing techniques for products ranging from semiconductor chips, smartphones and tablets, automotive, and appliances.  OEM applications include macromaterials processing, micromachining, biotech instrumentation, ultrafast spectroscopy, semiconductor inspection, solid state laser pumping and remote sensing. In manufacturing, the org’s high power fiber lasers enable high speed thick sheet metal cutting, welding, soldering, heat-treating, and surface treatment applications with improved processing quality in the most demanding environments.  The company has made significant investments in their internal vertically-integrated high power laser modules such as the ST series optical pump modules that leverage world class laser diode technology and wafer FAB.  High speed modulation and exceptional electrical-to-optical efficiency increase processing throughput, improved quality of processed materials, and lower cost of ownership.  

Lumentum’s products are used by large global OEMs in a variety of applications.  The Commercial Laser Business Unit is profitable and growing, with strong gross margins on annual revenue of ~$140M. It’s highly regarded technical engineering team is based primarily in Milpitas and Zurich with manufacturing in Thailand.  The company is well-positioned for continued success in the rapidly growing markets it serves.

 

Position: Vice President of Product Development – Commercial Lasers

This executive will lead and grow a team of approximately 80 across hardware, optical/laser, firmware/software, mechanical engineering, and program management to deliver world class, commercially successful, high power lasers. This VP will drive a global team (Bay Area/Switzerland) to implement processes and product development rigor that yields predictable, repeatable and scalable performance and market leading, differentiated, high quality products on time and on budget.

 
This executive will work with customers, product line management and sales to truly understand market requirements and ensure that the architectural goals and development process are aligned with plan of record. He/She will work cross-functionally to establish that the business and technology roadmaps are aligned and that the links to ensure DFM, DFQ and DFC are strong and engaged at the beginning of the new product development process.

This VP will be the driving force to implement best practices in product development, project management, test, and transfer to volume manufacturing, continuously increasing the output and performance of the team. He/She will set clear objectives and drive details of engineering to the customers, executive team and entire company, communicating specifics of development, release schedule, tradeoff analysis, and foster close collaboration across all teams and functions.

This VP will recruit, develop, motivate, empower, and retain a world class team and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evolution of the team. This VP will instill a culture of innovation, individual career development and high morale, mentoring and developing the next generation of great technology development executives.

This executive will manage the product development engineering organization and build/deliver world class products that win in the market. This VP will be a key technology leader, with frequent senior executive team, key customer and CEO interaction, and report directly to the Chief Operating Officer for Lumentum.


The qualified candidate will have the following:     

  • VP level leader of multi-location, multi-discipline engineering teams of similar size.
  • Verifiable success in the development of commercially successful OEM capital equipment products, preferably high powered macro and/or micro machining industrial lasers or their integration into laser-based OEM capital equipment products.
  • Track record of aligning product roadmaps to the business roadmaps and implementing best-in-class processes to ensure on time/on budget with high quality products.
  • Strong collaboration skills working across functions and geographies, specifically focusing on DFM, DFQ and DFC at the initiation of the product development cycle.
  • Ability to work well with executives and engineers at large OEM customers and partners to define, synthesize and prioritize products that meet future needs that will drive growth and profitability of Lumentum. 
  • Experience/success leading, scaling and developing a team, assessing, training, motivating and mentoring that team and fully developing the next generation of outstanding technology development executives.
  • Minimum of a BS/EE/Physics or equivalent degree required. MS or Ph.D. a plus.

Compensation:
