Mentor Graphics (NASDAQ: MENT) is a technology leader in electronic design automation (EDA). The company develops and markets software that enables its customers to develop better electronic products faster and more cost-effectively. Mentor sells its products and services worldwide, primarily to large companies in the military/aerospace, communications, computer, consumer electronics, semiconductor, networking, multimedia, and transportation industries.
The electronic systems that Mentor's customers create with its products include printed circuit boards (PCBs), integrated circuits (ICs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), embedded software solutions, and wire harness systems. Mentor's products are used in the design and development of a diverse set of electronic products, including automotive electronics, video game consoles, digital cameras, cell phones, computer network hubs and routers, PCs and products enabled with the Bluetooth short-range wireless radio and networking technology. As silicon manufacturing process geometries shrink, Mentor customers are creating entire electronic systems on a single IC. These are called system-on-chip (SoC) devices. This trend becomes apparent to the everyday consumer as consumer electronics become smaller and more sophisticated. This trend also poses significant opportunities and challenges for the EDA industry.
Mentor's products enable engineers to overcome increasingly complex electronic design challenges by improving the accuracy of complex designs and shrinking product time-to-market schedules. Products include Scalable Verification™ tools which allow engineers to verify that their complex IC designs actually function as intended. Functional errors are a leading cause of design revisions that slow down an electronic system's time-to-market and reduce profitability. Verification simulation tools are offered for digital, analog, and mixed signal applications. IC Design to Silicon tools address shrinking geometries and increasing design size in the nanometer era, thus enabling increasing functionality on a single IC. Integrated System Design - as ICs grow in complexity and function and PCB fabrication technology advances to include embedded components and high-density interconnect layers within the PCB - designing these PCBs is reaching new levels of complexity. Mentor's products address these challenges and support the design, physical layout, manufacturing, assembly, and test of PCBs. Other new and emerging products include ASIC and FPGA design tools; specialized software for design, analysis, manufacture, and data management for complex wire harness systems used in aero, auto, and other industries; electro-mechanical system design and verification tools; embedded software, and other tools to test IC designs.
Mentor Graphics was incorporated in 1981 and is headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon. The company employs 4,200 people in over 70 offices worldwide, with product development in the US, Egypt, France, India, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Taiwan, and the UK. Top customers include IBM, AMD, Infineon, Samsung, Nokia and Qualcomm. With 2009 revenue of approximately $800M, growing market share, consistent profitability and a strong balance sheet, Mentor is well-positioned for continuous industry leadership.
